The Hickey-Shanafelt 9ollective is a modern jazz nonet led by long-time friends Kent Hickey and Alex Shanafelt. Founded in 2019, the group is dedicated to writing, commissioning, and performing original music written by band members, local artists, and up-and-coming musicians around the country. The band features an eclectic book that takes advantage of the mixed small ensemble and the breadth of jazz, with charts spanning from traditional swing to aleatoric and free improvisation. The group returns to Chicago as part of a regional tour of The Region, fresh off the release of two albums in 2025. "The Kaleidoscope Suite," released in May 2025, documents the extended work of the same name co-written by Alex and Kent. The Suite is a cross-disciplinary collaboration with Indianapolis artist Kelsey Behl, where Behl paints a new work live alongside the band as they perform four thematically-driven movements. "A 9ollective Christmas," released in November 2025, is the nonet's take on familiar Christmas classics, featuring nine original arrangements that reimagine seasonal songs.
