On the surface, these two iconic masterpieces by Johannes Brahms and Anton Bruckner may seem an unlikely pairing. Are they too similar—or too different? In late-19th-century Vienna, music lovers were fiercely divided into rival camps of Brahmsians and Wagnerians. Bruckner, an ardent admirer of Richard Wagner, was often drawn into this battle, and the two composers were indeed professional competitors vying for the public’s favor. Yet beneath this public tension lay mutual personal respect, along with a shared fondness for beer and hearty Viennese fare. The Clarinet Quintet is one of Brahms’s final compositions and a deeply personal and nostalgic work, inspired by the eminent clarinetist and friend Richard Mühlfeld. Twelve years earlier, Bruckner composed his only major chamber work: the String Quintet with two violas in F major. The legendary pianist Glenn Gould described it as “the symphony Bruckner always wanted to write.” **Elizandro Garcia Montoya**, *Clarinet* – Principal clarinetist of the Chicago Philharmonic, Camerata Chicago, and Elmhurst Symphony, Elizandro has also performed with the Cleveland Orchestra and is a Fischoff Chamber Music Competition silver prizewinner. **Christopher Ferrer,** *Cello* – Founding member of Lakeshore Rush and principal cellist of Camerata Chicago, Christopher performs in chamber settings and outdoors alike, with collaborations including the Ferrer Miller Duo and guitarist Jim Wilson. **Rebecca Swan**, *Viola* – Principal violist of Chicago Sinfonietta, Illinois Philharmonic, and Elgin Symphony, Rebecca is a Juilliard graduate and an active soloist and chamber musician. **Mathias Tacke**, *Violin* - Concert Master of Camerata Chicago, former member of the Vermeer String Quartet and NIU professor, Mathias performs internationally and has earned three Grammy nominations for recordings. **Rika Seko**, *Violin* – Concertmaster of Elmhurst Symphony and Assistant Concertmaster of Camerata Chicago, Rika freelances extensively in the Chicago area and enjoys raising Monarch butterflies. **Istvan Loga**, *Viola* – GRAMMY® Award-winning violist and principal of Camerata Chicago, Istvan has performed with top orchestras, collaborated with artists from Martha Argerich to John Legend, and released solo albums showcasing his unique artistic voice.
